Chapter Seven

“You and Bear? Finally?” Sofia asked from her perch on the edge of the bathtub.

After breakfast, Bear had driven Kelly home. She’d been dressed only in one of his shirts. She’d dashed about getting fresh clothes while telling Sofia snatches of the story, then made her wait for the rest while she jumped in the shower.

Kelly nodded from where she was towel drying her hair.

“Was it good? Don’t answer that. Look at you, of course it was good. How good?”

“Out of this fucking world.”

“Huh. Well, it was only a matter of time. He does look at you like you’re bear bait,” Sofia said as she watched Kelly in the mirror. “So what’s it mean?”

“Mean?”

“Yeah. Where’s this going? You’re not the casual fuck type.”

Kelly sighed. Only very good friends could get away with so much nosiness. “It’s not going anywhere. Eventually, Bear’s going to leave town. Until he does, as long as he wants me, I’ll take what I can get.”

“He may not leave.”

Kelly looked at Sofia in the mirror. “I have to be realistic. It’ll rip me apart when he goes, but as long as I know it’s coming, I can protect myself. Make sure it doesn’t destroy me.”

“Maybe you’re his mate.”

Kelly couldn’t even think about that. She wished it was true so badly, but shifters weren’t reticent when it came to claiming their mates, be it another shifter or a non-shifter.

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

Sofia stood, rubbed a circle on the towel covering Kelly’s lower back. “Okay, I won’t push. I’ll just say one thing. How will he know you want him to stay unless you ask him?”

A few hours later, Sofia’s question was still flitting through her mind when Bear pulled his truck into a car park that was surrounded by a towering forest of Rosewoods.

“Where are we?”

“About twenty miles east of Shifter Town.” Rosewood had the biggest shifter population in the state, so people used the names interchangeably.

“Okay, wise guy,” like she couldn’t tell how far they’d come or the direction of travel, “what are we doing here?”

“Thought we might go for a picnic.”

“A picnic?”

“Something wrong with that?”

“No, I just thought… we’d stay closer to a bed.”

“Honey, I think last night proved we don’t need a bed.”

True.

They walked along a trail for about half an hour before he pulled her onto a little track, barely used, that led to a clearing next to a river.

“Ryan, it’s beautiful.” The sunlight caught the flowing water, like it was a stream of glitter framed by lush green grass. “Is this the Simona?”

“Yep.” The Simona River ran across the state and wound through Rosewood Forest. Shifter Town was built on its banks.

Kelly tugged off her boots and waded in, knee deep, playing and splashing in the water. Bear unpacked the picnic then sat on the bank.

“You don’t want to come in?”

He shook his head. Kelly splashed him. Bear chuckled, but didn’t move, happy watching her. If he went in to play with her, they’d start playing.

Eventually she tired and flopped down on the blanket next to him.
